Nadia Fairfax

A Moment in Place with Nadia Fairfax

Physically, where are you right now? Are you at home, on holiday, in the office or elsewhere?

I'm sitting in Paloma Salon getting my colour done... I did just return from a delightful little escape to Bali, I am not very good in the cold weather... My body was craving warmth!

What have been some of your most profound personal challenges and have they ever informed your creative process or interrupted it?

This isn't a personal challenge - but career wise, I've found I struggle with how we are perceived on social media. I worry a lot about what to share, what not to share, is that too sexy, is that age appropriate etc? It's a constant battle within. 100pc it interrupts my creative process, which is a shame really... All credit to girls who aren't afraid!

If you analysed the most important factors in your success, what would say these have been?

I don't know if I'd say if I've had "success" as such, I just plod along doing the best I can. I work hard and I like to do things well, but I'm just trying to create a happy life for myself and those around me. There's such negative connotations towards my industry - I guess in these past few years I've really shied away from "pushing for more". I do feel like I'm at the beginning of a new chapter of my life. Perhaps this is where all the success will come! We'll see....

What are your personal and creative rituals, if any?

I wouldn't say I have any rituals. However, I do operate depending on how my body and mind feels. I am extraordinarily lucky that I work for myself and can dictate the hours and days I get stuff done. If my brain is firing deep into the evenings, I try to embrace it. If it's just "not happening" for me some days - I just shut shop and come back to it when I've got my groove. I find it so much more productive.

Where do you go to find creative refuge?

Walking. It's where any ideas I have come from. In the warmer months I will walk for hours. Nothing too strenuous, just buzzing along with some good tunes in my earphones.... My brain sizzles away, I often have to stop and make notes.

If you could go back in time and begin again without knowing what you do now, would you?

Only If I were able to keep the special parts - Relationships and all of the great memories.

What piece of wisdom currently resonates with you and how does it inform your approach to life right now?

My mother uses a euphemism to describe friendship. "Friendships are like trees - Sometimes branches break off, some will bear fruit". It's always been a good reminder to make hard choices. If someone's morals don't align with your own - Get out the chainsaw! Hahaha.
