A French oil on canvas by Jacques Philippard, dated October 1923.
This naïve oil on canvas in an oak frame is complete with a studio mark and dedication on the back by the artist. Philippard was a well respected artist working in France in the early 20th century, painting the buildings and landscapes he saw around him.
This scene depicts a small farm in the Loire valley, in the 'pays sarthois' or 'country of the Sarthois people' in the department of Sarthe. The painting was problably painted plein air, in the fields of the farm itself. The artist has beautifully captured the feeling of an overcast day in the French countryside, with painterly brush strokes and an expert eye for colour.
Measurements including frame 25cm x 18cm
The piece is in good overall condition for its 96 year age, though there are some small historic worm holes to one part of the stretcher on the reverse.
